AI Tools

Every assistant is excellent in a demo and uneven on your actual work. This category is judged on one question: does the $20 plan remove the specific limit you hit last week?

Compare: ChatGPT Plus vs Claude Pro Budget: one subscription is enough

What actually decides an AI subscription

1. Which limit you hit first

Message caps, context window, file upload size, image generation, tool calls — every plan rations something different. Identify the wall you hit in the free tier this week; that is the feature you're paying to remove.

2. Long-document behaviour

Pasting a 60-page contract is where assistants diverge most. Some summarise confidently and skip the clause you needed. Test with a document you already know the answer to — that's the only benchmark that transfers to your work.

3. Code you have to trust

For development, the useful axis is not "writes code" but "admits when it can't". A model that silently invents an API is more expensive than one that asks a question.

4. Data handling and retention

Check whether your inputs train future models by default, whether you can opt out, and what the retention window is. For business documents this matters more than any quality difference.

5. What the free tier already covers

Most people's real usage — rewriting an email, explaining an error, drafting an outline — is inside the free limit. Paying $20/month to avoid a limit you hit twice is the most common wasted subscription in this category.

One subscription, not five

Two $20 plans cost $480 a year and overlap by roughly 80%. Pick the one that wins on your primary task, and use free tiers for the rest. If you can't name your primary task in one sentence, don't subscribe yet.
