AI tools under $20/month

Most people should pay for exactly one AI subscription, and it should be the one that removes the limit they hit last week. Five subscriptions at $20 each is $1,200 a year for roughly the same capability.

The framework: pay to remove a limit

Free tiers are not crippled demos any more — they're genuinely usable. What they ration is volume, context length, advanced tools and peak-hour access. So the question is never "which is best" but "which wall did I hit this week".

Wall you keep hittingWhat paying $20 fixesWas it worth it?
"I hit the daily message cap"Higher caps, priority at peak timesYes, if it happens 3+ times a week
"The document is too long"Larger context windowYes, if you read long files monthly
"It can't browse / analyse my file"Tools: browsing, code execution, file analysisOnly if you use them weekly
"I want it to sound better"Marginal — prompt quality dominatesNo
"I want to try the newest model"Early accessNo, for most people

Which one, if you pay for one

Broad, varied work — research, images, spreadsheets, quick utilities — one generalist plan with tools covers the most ground. This is the better choice if you don't want to think about which tool to open.

Deep text and code — long documents, contracts, production code — a plan optimised for long context and careful reasoning is the better fit. It will be narrower, and you'll miss the image and data tools.

For the detailed head-to-head, see ChatGPT Plus vs Claude Pro. The short version: pick by your primary task, not by benchmark charts — those measure tasks nobody actually does for a living.

Keep these free

Translation, transcription of short audio, basic image editing, grammar checking and document summarisation all have free tiers good enough for occasional use. Paying for five tools to avoid five small limits is how subscription sprawl starts.

The two-week test before you pay

  1. Pick three real tasks you did last week. Not prompts you invent for the test — actual work.
  2. Add one you already know the answer to. This is the only reliable way to catch confident wrong answers.
  3. Run all four through two free tiers, same prompts, same day.
  4. Count how often you were blocked. Zero blocks in two weeks means the free tier is your answer.

Before you paste anything confidential

Check three things in the settings: whether your inputs are used for training by default, whether you can opt out, and what the retention window is. If you handle client material under NDA, this matters more than any quality difference between models — and it changes often, so read the policy page rather than any review, including this one.

When to stop paying

Cancel if you've gone two weeks without opening the app. AI subscriptions are the easiest recurring charge to forget, and the hardest to justify retroactively.

Stop at one subscription unless you can name a billable use case for the second. Two plans at $20 overlap by roughly 80% for most knowledge work.

Don't subscribe at all yet if you can't state your primary task in one sentence. That sentence is the whole decision.

$240/year testWould you pay $240 in one lump sum for what this subscription did last month? If the answer is "not sure", cancel and re-subscribe when you are.

FAQ

Is the $20 tier enough for work?

For individual knowledge work, generally yes. The jump to team tiers buys admin controls and shared workspaces, not better answers.

Do I need two subscriptions for writing and coding?

Usually no. Pick the one that's better at your primary task and use free tiers for the secondary one. Upgrade only when a project pays for it.

Will the free tier disappear?

Unlikely — free tiers are customer acquisition. But limits shift, so re-check when your usage grows.
